On the twelfth hour of October 21, 1989, 43 different women around the world who showed no signs of pregnancy prior that day suddenly went into labor. Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), an eccentric billionaire, found out about this strange event. Believing that these children would be special, Sir Reginald sought out for them and managed to adopt seven babies.
After the foundlings were raised, examined, experimented on, and trained by their adoptive father, the world-famous entrepreneur turned his adopted children into a teenage-crime-fighting team called The Umbrella Academy. The Hargreeves bunch is composed of Luther/Number One (Tom Hopper) who has super strength; Diego/Number Two (David Castañeda) who has the ability to curve any trajectory; Allison /Number Three (Emmy Raver-Lampman) who can charmspeak anyone by starting a sentence with “I heard a rumor…”; Klaus/Number Four (Robert Sheehan) a séance; Ben/Number Six (Justin H. Min), who summons an eldritch tentacle from his stomach portal; the nameless Number 5 (Aidan Gallagher), who can manipulate the space-time continuum; and Vanya/Number Seven (Ellen Page).
Seventeen years later, as the crime-fighting squad grew up, each of them had left their home to live a life of their own. However, news of their father's death became a reunion that they never wanted, aggravated by a chain of simmering conflicts among siblings. Soon, the family squabble was put to a halt by the sudden return of a missing member of the family who later confides with their only ordinary sibling, Vanya, to reveal an earth-shattering news—the world ending in eight days.
This 10-episode superhero fiction came from a comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá that started on September 19, 2007. All episodes were made available at once on Netflix, which made this show perfect for the binge-watching couch potatoes and earned the show nominations for various awards such as the People’s Choice Awards for “The Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show of 2019” and “The Bingeworthy Show of 2019.”
The Umbrella Academy’s dark and gritty tone did not hinder its ability to make its viewers laugh throughout the series as the siblings were still able to pull off a few punchlines even in dire situations. This dark comedy superhero series is full of creative twists that will outsmart your own expectations. Mind-boggling transitions were exhibited multiple times where there are some episodes that throw light on the unexpected, leaving you stupefied after processing what just happened throughout the episode. Praises were given to the teenage actor, Aidan Gallagher, who managed to convince the audience about the chemistry going on between him and his mannequin named Dolores.
Netflix surely pleased the eager fans, especially with the announcement of the second season coming this year on July 31.
