College's Pride on International Stage: Mendoza as the First Commerce Student to Win an IBS Award

By Mark Raziel B. Pagaduan

Angelica Cherie Mendoza (3M3), a member of the Tiger Media Network, becomes the first ever Commerce student to bring home the Best Promotions Director Television Award during the 83rd Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Awards held at the Sheraton Times Square, New York City.

Mendoza told the UST – Commerce Journal in an interview that the process prior to winning the award was especially a tough one since they had to go through a phase of trial and error and had to attend numerous meetings and pitching. She also stated that her delegation had to draft effective methods to promote the Tiger Media Network considering collegiate-level instruction - which has primarily been conducted online - gradually making a return to an in-person setting.

However, despite the long and rigorous preparation, Mendoza considers this a huge achievement because she feels like her dedication, commitment, and hard work paid off: “When I first started as a Content Strategist, I honestly didn’t expect to reach this far. The network has provided me with various events and opportunities for me to showcase my skills and have really pushed me out of my comfort zone to achieve the best things such as winning this award. Thus, as a Marketing Student, I can proudly say that the skills and learnings I have acquired from the courses I took & currently taking have made a significant impact on my work ethics.

Mendoza also shared how she feels on representing not only the College and organization, but also the University. “I feel proud because I am not just carrying the name of Tiger Media Network but I am also representing the University of Santo Tomas and the Philippines, since among all who qualified for the IBS Competition, the Tiger Media Network is the only representative of the Philippines, she said

Mendoza, together with the Tiger Media Network team, was nominated in different categories alongside several international schools such as University of West Georgia, Arizona State University, College of the Desert, Cerritos College, DePaul University, University of Illinois in Chicago, and the like.

When asked about her advice to those who seek to follow her footsteps in upholding student excellence when it comes to leadership, Mendoza states that one should not control his/her team members in doing their projects. For her, it is best to help them discover how to achieve their target goals and guide them towards a successful execution of their works: “To be a great leader, you have to have a sense of direction or vision where you will move forward with your team and/or coach them, influence them or lead them to achieve that vision along with their personal goals being achieved as well.

Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) is one of the longest-running collegiate broadcasting organizations in the United States that supports and promotes educational, community, and student media outlets. The awarding took place on February 25, 2023 and she is the first Commerce student to receive such an award.
